DA-Ilocos Distributes PHP20 Million Aid to Over 8,000 Farmers and Fisherfolk

Manila: The Department of Agriculture 1 (DA-1) has announced the distribution of nearly PHP20 million in cash aid to more than 8,000 small farmers and fisherfolk in the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. This significant aid effort aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by these agricultural workers due to high production costs and fluctuating fuel prices.

According to Philippines News Agency, the recipients of the aid received PHP2,325 each over the weekend, as part of the second phase of the program. The initial phase of this program was implemented in the region during the third week of April. The cash assistance is a component of the PHP10-billion Presidential Assistance to Farmers and Fisherfolk Program (PAFFP), which seeks to support small-scale producers across the nation.

The program specifically targets rice farmers cultivating two hectares or less, as well as corn and sugarcane farmers registered under the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA). Additionally, fisherfolk registered under the National Program for Municipal Fishing Vessels and Gears Registration, or BoatR, are included in this unconditional cash assistance initiative.

During an interview conducted by the Philippine News Agency, Ronel Abad, a registered farmer from Barangay San Lorenzo, San Nicolas town, expressed his gratitude for the support. Abad mentioned the challenges he faces due to high diesel costs and explained that he supplements his family's income by operating a tricycle-for-hire registered under his elderly mother's name.

Similarly, William Baniaga, a farmer from Vintar town, acknowledged the ongoing government support through various interventions. He highlighted the difficulties posed by rising fuel and food prices and expressed appreciation for the government's sustained assistance.

According to the DA, more farmers are expected to receive their payouts as the distribution of government services continues to expand. DA records show that 480,080 farmers across the region are slated to benefit from the program as it extends beyond its pilot phase.
