Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced plans to implement labeling for retail pork by August. This initiative aims to inform consumers about the origin of the pork they purchase, distinguishing between locally produced and imported products. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. made this announcement during a market inspection at the Paco public market in Manila, highlighting the need for transparency in product labeling.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DA is also instructing retailers to ensure proper ice provision for displayed frozen imported pork to maintain its quality and safety. The department is setting a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) for imported pork to prevent profiteering, which involves mislabeling imported pork as local to sell it at higher prices. The MSRP aims to deter such practices and ensure fair pricing in the market.
Secretary Tiu Laurel noted the previous MSRP estimates for imported pork are still under review and will be finalized before the August implementation. Additionally, the DA plans to offer cheaper local pork options through various outlets like Kadiwa ng Pangulo centers and public markets to address inflationary pressures. However, the MSRP will not apply to local pork as the local hog industry undergoes repopulation efforts.
