Sta. Cruz: Police seized PHP5.5 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested one suspect during an early Sunday operation in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, officials reported Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Brig. Gen. Leon Victor Rosete, PRO-11 director, stated that officers initially investigating illegal firearms instead discovered 110 master cases (5,500 reams) of contraband cigarettes stacked near a residential road.
The suspect, identified only by the alias "Lester," was apprehended without incident. Brig. Gen. Rosete emphasized the significance of the operation, stating, "The operation demonstrates our commitment to combat smuggling," and commended the efforts of the Regional Special Operations Group and local police involved in the operation.
The seized cigarettes, bearing various foreign brands, were allegedly smuggled into the country illegally, highlighting ongoing challenges in the fight against smuggling activities in the region.
