De Lima Asserts Single Conviction Can Oust VP Sara Duterte

Manila: The impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte has been streamlined into four key articles, with a single conviction by the Senate deemed sufficient for her removal and permanent disqualification from public office, as stated by Mamamayang Liberal Party-list Representative Leila de Lima.

According to Philippines News Agency, de Lima, who serves on the House Committee on Justice, outlined the committee's report and the Articles of Impeachment after they were approved for plenary consideration. A significant update was added to the unexplained wealth charge, concerning Duterte's alleged ties to Metro Chow company, which was not divested despite records from the Securities and Exchange Commission indicating her ongoing involvement as a shareholder and board member.

De Lima highlighted that this business involvement was included under the unexplained wealth article due to its constitutional implications. The impeachment articles encompass misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery and graft, and threats related to an alleged conspiracy against the President, First Lady, and former House Speaker. These articles will be presented to the plenary and, if approved, will proceed to the Senate.

De Lima explained that similar grounds were consolidated to enhance clarity and coherence. She emphasized that a conviction on any single article would suffice to remove Duterte from office and bar her from future public service. She expressed confidence in the case's strength, attributing it to the evidence and the unanimous committee vote, which she believes underscores the robustness of the impeachment articles.
