Denmark Backs Revitalization of Philippine Shipbuilding and Repair Industry

Manila: The Danish Embassy in Manila has expressed its support for the Philippines' efforts to revitalize its shipbuilding and ship repair industry, a move spearheaded by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA).

According to Philippines News Agency, Danish Ambassador Franz-Michael Mellbin highlighted Denmark's long-standing maritime expertise during the launch of the SBSR initiative in Manila. Mellbin offered Denmark's support, emphasizing the potential for the Philippines to become a global hub for shipbuilding and repair. He stated, "Together, we can build a future where the Philippines not only continues to excel in shipping but also becomes a global hub for shipbuilding and repair."

MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan discussed the importance of collaborating with foreign partners to transform the Philippines into a nation of shipbuilders, not just seafarers. She noted the contributions of key industry players such as Tsuneishi, Austal, Dycast, and Hyundai in driving economic growth and expanding the country's shipbuilding capacity. Malaluan emphasized, "With global demand for shipbuilding on the rise, this initiative represents a crucial step toward securing the Philippines' future as a key player in the global maritime economy."

ARTA Director General Ernesto Perez also underscored the strategic significance of a robust maritime sector for the Philippines. He remarked on the country's status as a top global player in shipping and the need to enhance shipbuilding and repair capabilities. Perez stated, "By improving policies and fostering innovation, we aim to further enhance the Philippines' standing as a global maritime leader."

A central element of the initiative is the SBSR bill, which aims to modernize the industry, create high-quality jobs, and attract foreign investment. Perez pointed out the bill's importance for the Philippines' long-term growth and competitiveness in the maritime sector.
