Department of Agriculture Highlights Need for Youth Engagement in Farming

Córdoba:The Department of Agriculture (DA) emphasized the importance of creating an appealing agricultural ecosystem and sustainable businesses to attract young Filipinos, as the current farm workforce continues to age.

According to Philippines News Agency, this initiative was discussed during the XII Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries in Córdoba, Spain. DA Assistant Secretary Willie Ann Angsiy stated that the agriculture sector must offer a career path that is attractive to the younger generation.

The department highlighted that merely providing land, loans, monetary support, and training is insufficient to draw young people into agriculture. Factors such as climate change, inflation, and geopolitical tensions also impact the sector's appeal. Angsiy mentioned that for the Philippines, renewing the agricultural workforce involves more than replacing the older generation; it requires creating conditions that make agriculture and fisheries a desirable profession and enterprise for young people.

Currently, the DA is enhancing programs aimed at the youth, such as the Young Farmers Challenge (YFC) and training networks managed by the Agricultural Training Institute. The YFC provides young farmers with startup capital, business development support, and mentoring to turn agricultural ideas into viable enterprises.

Angsiy also stressed the importance of supporting women in agriculture to advance generational transitions. Despite their significant roles in production, processing, and marketing, women face challenges in accessing property, financing, technology, and leadership positions. The DA is working to improve women's opportunities in areas like organic farming and mushroom production through regional programs.
