Cagayan de oro: Teachers in Northern Mindanao were honored by the Department of Education (DepEd) and public officials for their service and dedication, and for remaining in the profession despite the challenges they face each day.
According to Philippines News Agency, during the launch of Teachers Month over the weekend, Misamis Occidental Gov. Henry Oaminal Sr. highlighted the commitment of teachers who go beyond their required duties to support students not only academically but personally. He emphasized the importance of education as a crucial investment in Northern Mindanao's future.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara led the official nationwide launch of the 2026 National Teachers' Month during a vibrant kickoff program, rallying support to honor the vital role of educators under the theme "Teacher, Ikaw Naman." Held at the Limketkai Atrium, Angara and guest speakers praised teachers, emphasizing the need to celebrate and prioritize their contributions.
In his keynote message, Angara expressed gratitude towards President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s initiatives benefiting teachers' welfare. He also addressed recent school safety concerns and commended teachers' dedication in maintaining schools as nurturing environments. Angara reminded educators of their role as a second home for learners.
The event featured festive performances and heartfelt video tributes, highlighting teachers as the focal point of the celebration. Noteworthy moments included the unveiling of the Special Commemorative Cover by the Philippine Postal Corporation and recognition of exemplary educators like 2026 Metrobank Foundation Most Outstanding Filipino awardee Shiela Marie Amigo and DepEd Hero Jeric Maribao.
Corporate partner McDonald's Philippines contributed by donating 50 ReClassified Chairs to East City Central School, along with meal donations, interactive exhibits, and raffle prizes for attendees.
The program concluded with a community performance of "Hawak Kamay" and a special video message from First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, who expressed gratitude towards fellow educators. She acknowledged the sacrifices teachers make and their dedication to inspiring students.
Angara outlined key policy reforms to improve working conditions. Under the Expanded Career Progression System, over 93,000 teachers and school heads have been promoted, with continued efforts to create clearer professional pathways. Administrative burdens have been reduced, allowing teachers to focus on instruction and mentorship.
Financial and medical benefits have been expanded, including a doubled non-taxable annual teaching allowance and an annual medical allowance. Teachers also receive additional paid wellness leave and expanded Vacation Service Credits.
The National Teachers' Month celebration continues through October 5, culminating in National Teachers' Day.
