Quezon city: The Department of Education (DepEd) announced the commencement of nationwide orientation sessions aimed at preparing schools for significant learning reforms, including the transition to a three-term school calendar starting in the School Year 2026-2027.
According to Philippines News Agency, Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that the orientation sessions are crucial for teachers and school officials to comprehend the new policies, facilitating a smooth and well-supported transition. Angara highlighted the importance of understanding the implementation process, stating that the success of these reforms hinges on the ability of educators and school leaders to effectively execute them in real-world scenarios.
The initial session took place on April 8 at Miriam College in Quezon City, where education officials and stakeholders gathered to discuss the reforms under DepEd's Learning Systems strand. DepEd Assistant Secretary Jerome Buenviaje noted that the policies aim to create a considerate system for teachers, learners, and families, ensuring that conditions are conducive to genuine learning.
Key topics addressed during the orientation included the introduction of a three-term school calendar, revised classroom assessment and grading guidelines, an enhanced Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, flexible learning programs, and strategies for learning continuity during emergencies. Additional discussions covered work immersion and off-campus learning opportunities for SHS students, along with updated lesson planning standards.
DepEd outlined that the reform rollout will begin with regional and division officials and school heads, who will subsequently disseminate the changes to schools across the nation. Master teachers and classroom teachers are scheduled for orientation sessions in May, with assurances that they will not be required to report during their 30-day April break.
The phased approach is intended to provide schools with ample preparation time while minimizing disruptions to teaching and learning. This initiative is part of DepEd's broader efforts to enhance instructional support and elevate the quality of basic education within the K to 12 curriculum framework.
