Amlan: The Department of Education in the Negros Island Region (DepEd-NIR) will prioritize literacy and numeracy in public schools to improve learners' ability to read and write, an official said on Monday. Dr. Ramir Uytico, DepEd-NIR director, emphasized the need to address the widespread issue of illiteracy during this year's "Brigada Eskwela" as part of the preparation for the upcoming school year.
According to Philippines News Agency, Uytico highlighted that the literacy and numeracy performance of learners in the Philippines ranks low globally, based on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). "So it is part of the efforts of the Negros Island Region to eradicate illiteracy and to be of help to the learners," he stated.
Uytico mentioned that improving literacy and numeracy is among the top priorities in the region's educational initiatives. Schools in the Negros Island Region are expected to develop improvement plans focusing on these areas. Additionally, there will be enhanced assessment and evaluation processes to accurately gauge learners' performance.
The strategy includes a professional development program for teachers to equip them with essential skills to tackle local illiteracy issues. The School Heads Academy will also be introduced to ensure proper management of these educational programs.
Dr. Neri Ojastro, DepEd Negros Oriental Schools Division Superintendent, stressed the collective responsibility of the community in fostering literacy and numeracy skills among learners. The involvement of stakeholders is crucial in meeting these educational challenges.
The "Brigada Eskwela" kickoff featured participation from officials of various departments, symbolizing a unified commitment to the cause. Private partners contributed resources, including cleaning materials, paint, and a significant monetary donation, while Lampara Publishing House donated books for a new Literacy and Numeracy Center.
This center aims to support slow learners in improving their reading and writing skills, with hopes of expanding similar facilities to other schools. The event runs under the theme "Sama-sama Para sa Bayang Bumabasa" (Together for a Country that Reads) from June 9 to 13.
