Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against violence in schools as it investigates an alleged child abuse incident involving a public school teacher in Manila. The probe follows a complaint received by the DepEd-Schools Division Office of Manila, which alleges that a teacher in Tondo forced a male learner to eat a cockroach. The DepEd Central Office also received the report via the Learners TeleSafe Contact Center Helpline (LTCCH) under the Learner Rights and Protection Division (LRPD).

According to Philippines News Agency, "Under the leadership of Secretary Sonny Angara, the Department of Education enforces a clear zero-tolerance policy against any form of violence or abuse against learners," DepEd Chief Media Relations Officer Dennis Legaspi said in a Viber message. Legaspi assured that the investigation will be conducted 'swiftly and fairly.' "Any act that harms a child has no place in our schools, and those found accountable will face appropriate administrative and legal consequences in accordance with the law and due process," he added.

DepEd is also separately investigating an allegation of molestation involving another learner. "A simultaneous inquiry regarding the alleged molestation is being conducted to ensure that all learners involved are protected and assisted," Legaspi said, noting that proceedings will remain confidential to safeguard the welfare of the students.

Based on a report from the Manila Police District, the teacher allegedly threatened and forced the male learner to eat a cockroach after the student was reportedly caught molesting a female learner. DepEd has directed the concerned field office to immediately provide interventions, including class adjustments, psychosocial support, and close monitoring of the affected learners.
