DepEd Releases P18M Aid to Calamity-Hit Schools

Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) announced it has distributed over PHP18 million in aid to 222 schools affected by the combined impacts of tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong, along with the enhanced southwest monsoon.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) has earmarked PHP10.143 million for minor classroom repairs and PHP7.86 million for immediate cleaning and clearing operations in the impacted schools. An initial assessment revealed that 2,628 classrooms sustained minor damage valued at PHP128.77 million, while 726 classrooms suffered major damage totaling PHP475 million. Additionally, 732 classrooms were completely destroyed, resulting in estimated losses of PHP1.287 billion. Also affected were 327 water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara stated that alternative delivery modes (ADM) are being employed in certain evacuation centers to support displaced learners in coping and recovering. This includes basic learning sessions, which provide psychological first aid to affected learners at San Joaquin and Rosario Elementary Schools in Pasig.

Angara acknowledged the difficulties of studying under such conditions but emphasized the importance of keeping children engaged. He praised the efforts of teachers and volunteers in evacuation centers for their dedication. He also highlighted the necessity of ADMs for other learners in affected areas to maintain learning continuity, following directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

As of Friday, 24,485 schools nationwide have halted in-person classes due to severe weather conditions and flooding. Meanwhile, 453 public schools are currently serving as evacuation centers in regions including Metro Manila, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Negros Island Region.
