DFA Awaits Indonesia’s Decision on Veloso Transfer by Yearend.

MANILA: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is waiting for Indonesia's formal decision on Mary Jane Veloso's case, a ranking official said Wednesday. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migration Eduardo Jose De Vega stated that once Jakarta's final decision is released, the Philippines will meet with Indonesian officials to finalize the details of her transfer to a Philippine prison. According to Philippines News Agency, De Vega emphasized the importance of Indonesia's final decision to proceed with the transfer discussions. He mentioned on Radyo Pilipinas, "We are just waiting for Indonesia's final decision so we can sit down with them and get the details." The initial talks suggest that Veloso would serve her sentence in the Philippines if transferred, but the DFA is keen to explore the possibility of her eventual release. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted that Veloso's return is imminent, confirming an agreement between the two governments to repatriate her. De Vega described the transfer as a significant move for Veloso, who remains on Indonesia's death row. He noted, "Once she is here, it is understood that there is no more death penalty because we have control over her and we have no death penalty here." De Vega expressed hope for a successful and timely resolution, ideally by Christmas, although he refrained from making any guarantees. He assured that Veloso would be placed in better detention conditions upon her arrival in the Philippines. Last week, Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction indicated that Veloso must serve her remaining sentence in the Philippines for the transfer to occur. It also stated that rehabilitation and decisions on remission or clemency would be managed by the Philippines once Veloso is transferred.
