DFA Confirms One Filipino Fatality in Myanmar Earthquake

Manila: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed the death of a Filipino national in the aftermath of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar last month. The quake has caused significant destruction in the Southeast Asian country.

According to Philippines News Agency, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega announced that the remains of one of the four missing Filipinos have been identified in Mandalay, Myanmar. The family of the deceased has been informed, but further details are being withheld to respect their privacy during this time of mourning.

The Philippine government remains committed to efforts in locating the remaining three unaccounted Filipinos in the city. Alvin Aragon confirmed on Wednesday morning that his brother, Francis, was among those who have been found deceased. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Aragon expressed the family's grief and gratitude for the support and strength they have received.

De Vega also mentioned that a team from the National Bureau of Investigation is assisting in identifying remains in Mandalay. They are working meticulously to match DNA samples from the deceased with those provided by relatives.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which struck Sagaing in central Myanmar on March 28, caused widespread devastation in the country and affected neighboring Thailand. A United Nations situational report states that the death toll has surpassed 3,500, with over 200 individuals still missing.
