Bicol: The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in Bicol is strengthening its digital inclusion and connectivity efforts across the region, with more than 1.2 million active users now using the eGovPH app and additional programs in the pipeline to improve access to government services.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cyryl Montales, head of the DICT Bicol information strategic communication and creatives unit, stated that the agency continues to work with local officials and legislators to expand digital infrastructure, promote digital governance, and enhance digital literacy in support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s national digitalization agenda. Montales revealed that the eGovPH app has 1,271,547 active users in the Bicol Region, enabling Filipinos to access various government services through a single application.
The DICT's priority initiatives include expanding the Wi-Fi for All program, increasing the use of the eGovPH app, implementing the eLGU System, establishing additional Digital Transformation Centers, conducting cybersecurity awareness campaigns, and utilizing the Philippine National Public Key Infrastructure (PNPKI) for secure digital transactions. Geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) are prioritized in the Free Wi-Fi for All Program, with installations focusing on public schools and selected public spaces to improve internet accessibility.
The agency's digital literacy training programs target all sectors of society, including students, out-of-school youth, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, government and private sector employees, freelancers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and persons deprived of liberty. The DICT also emphasizes the importance of reliable telecommunications during disasters to ensure smooth coordination for faster response and service delivery to affected communities.
Montales noted that regional lawmakers have expressed support for the DICT's programs and initiatives following consultations aimed at strengthening collaboration for information and communications technology (ICT) development. She affirmed that these initiatives align with the Marcos administration's vision of a 'Bagong Pilipinas' by expanding reliable connectivity in underserved communities, strengthening cybersecurity, promoting digital governance, delivering digital skills training, and improving access to government services.
These efforts aim to create more opportunities for education, employment, and innovation while ensuring that more Bicolanos benefit from the country's ongoing digital transformation.
