Quezon city: The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) distributed 56 fire extinguishers to Culiat High School in Quezon City. This initiative is part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance fire safety measures in schools following his visit to San Francisco High School, which suffered a fire incident a day before the school year commenced.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos emphasized the need for proactive measures to ensure student and community safety during emergencies. DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, during the turnover ceremony, highlighted the importance of such initiatives, stating that protecting students from emergencies is a daily commitment of the DILG.
The donation enables Culiat High School, which accommodates approximately 2,000 students, to achieve a 1:1 fire extinguisher to classroom ratio, setting a benchmark for school safety and preparedness. Quezon City School Division Superintendent Carleen Sedilla expressed gratitude for the support from Secretary Remulla, Mayor Joy Belmonte, and Congresswoman Marivic Co-Pilar, emphasizing the significance of creating safe educational environments.
Between January 1 and July 1, 2025, a total of 8,195 fire incidents were reported nationwide, with 191 incidents occurring in Quezon City, including 15 in educational facilities. As part of the fire safety initiative, BFP personnel conducted a live demonstration of the proper use of fire extinguishers using the PASS method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep. Culiat High School Master Teacher Myrna Piedad and Grade 9 student Isabella Heart Cabra participated, enhancing fire response awareness among the school community.
Secretary Remulla also announced the activation of the national 911 emergency hotline, promising a three-minute response time for emergencies nationwide, reinforcing the government's commitment to public safety.
