Manila: Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that the country's democratic institutions will only remain strong if young Filipinos actively demand accountability and participate in governance.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DILG Secretary emphasized the essential role of the youth in advancing transparency, accountability, and meaningful citizen participation. He encouraged the young generation to exercise their right to demand accountability and ensure their voices are heard, stating that change is dependent on their active involvement. This message was delivered to students, educators, civil society leaders, and government partners at the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Localization Forum held at De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila.

Addressing the students and faculty, Remulla urged the youth to become active participants in nation-building by questioning government actions and speaking out against practices that undermine public trust. He emphasized the importance of keeping discussions on good governance alive and reminded the audience that the freedoms enjoyed today were secured by those who fought for democracy. He called on the younger generation to protect these rights by exercising them responsibly.

Highlighting integrity's role in governance, Remulla shared his commitment to transparency by citing Cavite's distinction as the country's first ISO-certified provincial government during his governorship. He outlined key reforms by the DILG to strengthen accountability in public service, such as removing budget anomalies, addressing procurement irregularities, and intensifying anti-corruption efforts within the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Among the department's transparency initiatives is the livestreaming of public bidding, which enabled the DILG to procure 224 vehicles at approximately PHP100 million below the projected cost. This initiative demonstrated how open and accountable processes can deliver greater value for public funds.

During the forum, the DILG formally accredited the DLSU-Jesse M. Robredo Institute of Governance as a partner in implementing empowerment programs for civil society organizations and the OGP Localized Program nationwide. This accreditation further strengthens collaboration between government, academe, and civil society in promoting open governance.
