Dinagat Islands Pursues P500-Million Cagdianao Port Expansion

Manila: Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. met with officials from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) in Manila to advance the proposed expansion and modernization of the Cagdianao Port. This project is considered crucial for the economic development of the province.

According to Philippines News Agency, Demerey held discussions with PPA General Manager Jay Santiago and Assistant General Manager for Administration and Finance Elmer Nonnatus Cadano at the agency's central office. The meeting focused on securing PHP500 million in funding for the port's development.

Demerey emphasized the long-term benefits of the project, which aims to transform Dinagat Islands into a center for commerce, tourism, and sustainable growth. The modernization plan includes transforming Cagdianao Port into a gateway for roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) operations, enhancing the movement of passengers, cargo, and essential services between the island province and neighboring areas.

Demerey highlighted that improved connectivity would facilitate a more efficient flow of goods and services, benefiting local communities and regional trade partners. The discussions also explored the port's future potential to accommodate cruise ships, which would attract international travelers and new investment opportunities to the Dinagat Islands.

The modernization is expected to further boost the Siargao-Dinagat tourism route, which has been operational for two years since its opening in April 2024. This route is crucial for enhancing tourism and the transportation of agricultural products from Dinagat to Siargao.

Demerey noted that every phase of the port's development would create jobs and expand opportunities for the local population. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with national agencies to secure projects that align with the province's vision for sustainable development.

The governor concluded by stating that partnership is essential for progress, and working closely with the PPA and other agencies will accelerate development for the province.
