Distance learning taps Minecraft’s mobile education edition

Another level of learning experience can now be hovered via android mobile as the Department of Education (DepEd) encourages teachers and learners to explore a studying-while-gaming method, using the Minecraft: Education Edition (M:EE).

It is a mobile application launched on March 16 in partnership with Microsoft Philippines seeking to amplify efforts in game-based learning in the country.

Jhunar Mondejar, 34, a teacher for around 12 years, shared his optimism, attesting to Minecraft’s efficiency as a learning tool that he has been using for some time now.

“Last year, we just started to adopt the M:EE as a learning tool. Students were really happy to see and use it. In our modern era, students would like to explore other activities that will gain their learning with games,” he said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Monday.

He recalled several challenges on using the platform but noted that it has significantly improved, aiding them in online distance learning.

“First, there was, upon logging using student’s DepEd email, and glitches from the M:EE, while on our activities, like some of them can’t join because of restrictions on having 3-5 learners to join the group on M:EE. And another thing, it was only intended for computers, laptops, and desktops, but now, they can use it on their android phones,” he explained.

On March 19, the DepEd released three easy steps to maximize the M:EE on mobiles.

Learners and teachers can freely download the M:EE for mobile via Google PlayStore. After successful installation, registered DepEd Microsoft 365 accounts can be signed in, and eventually, students can access the prepared games for learning.

Currently, the DepEd Educational Technology Unit (ETU) works closely with the Department of Information and Communications Technology to provide online tutorials in exploring the creative learning platform, particularly airing free tutorials in ETulay Online.
