Manila: Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon has mandated the redesign of inlets along major roads in Metro Manila to address the persistent flooding issues plaguing the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, during a visit to the Remedios Pumping Station in Manila, Dizon emphasized the need to widen inlets to facilitate quicker drainage of floodwaters. The initiative will prioritize national roads such as Roxas Blvd., EDSA, C-5, Taft Avenue, Espa±a, Quezon Avenue, and Commonwealth, starting with flood-prone areas where existing inlets are insufficient.
Dizon highlighted the importance of enlarging the inlets on major roads to improve water flow, specifically mentioning the Estrella section of EDSA as a critical area requiring intervention. He stressed the urgency of executing these redesign projects to prevent heavy flooding.
The DPWH Secretary indicated that maintenance funds will be allocated for these projects, noting that there are no specific flood control funds for 2026. Efforts have already commenced along EDSA and C-5 in Pasig City.
In addition to inlet redesign, Dizon pledged to repair roads damaged by recent heavy rains, acknowledging the challenges posed by the current weather conditions. He emphasized the need for comprehensive solutions, including drainage system repairs and pump maintenance.
Dizon also confirmed the arrival of two new pumps, which will be installed once weather conditions permit. These pumps, along with backup units from the Metro Manila Development Authority, are crucial for directing floodwaters from Taft Avenue and Remedios Circle toward Manila Bay.
