DMW and Legal Education Board Join Forces to Enhance Legal Aid for OFWs

Mandaluyong city: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has partnered with the Legal Education Board (LEB) to provide accessible legal aid for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) while training the next generation of lawyers to defend workers' rights.

According to Philippines News Agency, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with LEB Chairperson Jason Barlis at the DMW Central Office in Mandaluyong City. Cacdac highlighted that the agreement aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directives to bolster the rights and welfare of OFWs, emphasizing the law as a crucial tool against exploitation and distress.

The agreement promises to offer OFWs facing legal challenges the support they need through collaboration with legal aid clinics in law schools. This initiative not only aids OFWs but also provides law students with the opportunity to engage in real-world cases, enhancing their understanding of labor rights and social justice.

Barlis noted that the partnership aims to make legal education more purposeful by ensuring access to justice for those far from home and providing students with practical experience. He stressed that this initiative would cultivate a new generation of lawyers dedicated to migrant protection and social justice.
