Vancouver: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has renewed its commitment to protecting Filipino seafarers in a series of engagements in Vancouver, Canada.
According to Philippines News Agency, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac made a courtesy visit to the Mission to Seafarers in Vancouver, where he personally checked on the welfare of the 22-member crew aboard the Tauranga Maersk, 16 of whom are Filipinos. During his meeting with Reverend Peter Smyth, Senior Port Chaplain, Cacdac expressed gratitude for the mission's partnership with the DMW and the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Vancouver, emphasizing the importance of promoting the rights and welfare of Filipino seafarers in Canada.
He highlighted the significance of addressing both physical and spiritual health concerns of Filipino seafarers, acknowledging the Mission to Seafarers as a valuable partner in providing care, counseling, and support to them during their port calls. The Mission to Seafarers in Vancouver offers international seafarers welfare services, including chaplain services, emergency support, and ship visit assistance.
During the port call to Tauranga Maersk, Cacdac listened to the concerns of Filipino seafarers, discussed their working conditions, and shared updates on DMW programs and services. These programs include upskilling and career development initiatives in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and the Maritime Industry Authority. Cacdac assured the crew that the DMW is prepared to address not only work-related issues but also those affecting their families in the Philippines.
He acknowledged the challenges of working far from family and encouraged seafarers to voice any concerns, particularly those involving loved ones back home. Cacdac emphasized the readiness of the DMW to assist through its 16 regional offices and 42 overseas operating posts, including the MWO and OWWA offices in Vancouver.
The ship's master, DG Dsouza, welcomed the Philippine delegation, commending the government's commitment to protecting seafarers and praising the Filipino crew members for their competence, professionalism, work ethic, and leadership potential.
Cacdac was part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s delegation during his official visit to Canada from July 1-4.
