DOE Engages OECD-NEA Expertise for Philippine Nuclear Energy Program

Taguig City: The Department of Energy (DOE) has engaged the expertise of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development - Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD-NEA) to support its objectives under the Philippine Nuclear Energy Program.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla and OECD-NEA Director General William Magwood IV convened in Taguig City on February 24 to discuss advancements in the nation's nuclear energy sector. The DOE emphasized that the OECD-NEA's expertise will be crucial as the government strives to incorporate nuclear power into the country's energy mix, targeting the introduction of 1,200 megawatts from nuclear technologies by 2032.

Secretary Lotilla stated that substantial efforts have been directed towards establishing a robust legal and regulatory framework for nuclear energy. Significant strides have been made in submitting the requisite documentation for the ratification of existing nuclear energy-related agreements, which is essential for developing a secure, sustainable, and responsible nuclear energy program to ensure the country's energy future.

Lotilla also noted key achievements, including the adoption of a clear national policy on nuclear energy through Executive Order 164 and receiving commendation from the International Atomic Energy Agency in December 2024. However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as escalating nuclear project costs and persistent supply chain issues.

OECD-NEA Director General Magwood commended the Philippines' progress and promised ongoing support from the OECD-NEA to address these challenges. He assured that the organization would provide technical expertise and assist in developing the local workforce, highlighting a commitment to fostering a productive relationship with the Philippines.
