Manila: The Energy Department on Tuesday emphasized the importance of enhancing governance within the energy sector, focusing particularly on non-compliant power producers to guarantee sufficient and affordable energy supply for consumers. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, during a press conference, revealed that show-cause orders have been issued to several generation companies that failed to submit the required reports.

According to Philippines News Agency, Garin mentioned that follow-ups are being conducted with companies that have yet to comply with the regulations. She highlighted the necessity of energy reform, emphasizing the importance of utilizing every available megawatt and ensuring that all participants within the energy system fulfill their obligations.

Garin underscored that accountability should permeate the entire energy system, urging all stakeholders, including generation, transmission, and distribution firms, to meet these challenges. She stated that a business-as-usual approach is inadequate and emphasized the need for regulators to possess the authority to enforce rules. Additionally, Garin stressed the government's responsibility to anticipate future power requirements and manage the transition to a cleaner energy mix without compromising reliability or affordability.

The government's goal is to increase the share of renewable energy within the country's total generation mix to approximately 35 percent by 2030 and 40 percent by 2040. As of 2025, renewable energy's share in the total generation mix stands at around 25 percent.
