Manila: The Department of Finance (DOF) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) have initiated the distribution of the first batch of the final wave of unclaimed balikbayan boxes to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). This distribution took place on Wednesday at the BOC grounds in Port Area, Manila, and was led by Finance Secretary Frederick Go and Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno.
According to Philippines News Agency, this effort marks the beginning of the concluding phase of the initiative that started on December 18, 2025. The initial phase saw the release of 68 containers from customs ports, with these being transferred to logistics partners' warehouses. These containers held a total of 20,944 balikbayan boxes, out of which 14,305 were successfully delivered to their intended OFW recipients.
The final wave is set to distribute 72 containers, containing an estimated 24,536 balikbayan boxes. Presently, 14 containers have been released from the Manila International Container Port (MICP), while 58 containers await processing, pending the completion of necessary clearances and the waiver of port charges. Upon meeting all documentary requirements, the BOC will proceed with the release and delivery of the remaining containers.
The initiative is supported by the approval of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., highlighting the administration's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of OFWs. Beyond the ceremonial distribution, the event served as a platform for direct consultation between government officials and OFWs, addressing concerns about abandoned balikbayan boxes and explaining the causes of these situations. The DOF and BOC also outlined ongoing reforms to streamline processing, enhance transparency, and expedite delivery to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The distribution was conducted in full compliance with established customs procedures, with BOC personnel ensuring proper documentation, inspection, and organized release of each shipment. The BOC worked closely with relevant government offices, stakeholders, and logistics partners to ensure the process was efficient, accountable, and transparent.
BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized the importance of restoring trust and protecting OFWs, committing to complete the delivery of abandoned boxes while reforming systems and enforcing accountability. Finance Secretary Frederick Go expressed satisfaction with the initiative, noting the President's approval for door-to-door delivery of the boxes at no extra charge to the recipients.
