DOH-Bicol Reports 13 Fireworks-Related Injuries Amid Holiday Celebrations

LEGAZPI CITY: The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) has reported 13 cases of fireworks-related injuries in the region from December 21 to 29, highlighting ongoing safety concerns during holiday festivities. The incidents, which occurred in the provinces of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Albay, underscore the risks associated with personal use of fireworks.

According to Philippines News Agency, the injured were treated at various regional hospitals, including five at Bicol Medical Center, three at Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center, three at Camarines Norte Provincial Hospital, and two at Josefina Belmonte Duran Albay Provincial Hospital. The types of fireworks involved in the incidents included kwitis, five-star, whistle bomb, and boga, an improvised cannon. Out of the 13 individuals affected, 12 were discharged after receiving medical attention, while one required admission for further care.

DOH-Bicol Director Dr. Rodolfo Antonio Albornoz has urged the public to explore safer alternatives for celebrating New Year's Eve. "Keep yourself and your family safe from injuries and accidents related to fireworks. Use alternative methods of making noise, such as banging drums or pots, or watch a community fireworks display to avoid using personal fireworks," Albornoz advised in Filipino. He also stressed the importance of exercising caution when cleaning up after celebrations, warning against picking up stray firecrackers and advising close supervision of children. In case of injuries, he recommended immediate visits to the nearest health facility for appropriate care and treatment.
