Legazpi: The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) has issued a reminder to the public to take preventive measures against dengue through the "4S Kontra Dengue" strategy as the rainy season sets in.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH reported a total of 952 dengue cases in the region from January 1 to May 24, 2025. This figure represents a 112-percent increase in cases compared to the same period last year. The "4S" strategy is designed to combat the spread of dengue through four key actions: "search" and destroy mosquito breeding sites, practice "self-protection" using insect repellent and protective clothing, "seek" early medical consultation upon experiencing symptoms, and "support" local fogging or spraying initiatives in outbreak areas.
The DOH-5 emphasized its continued collaboration with partners and local government units to bolster the National Dengue Control Program. This initiative aims to enhance community engagement and response to the rising number of dengue cases.
In a separate interview, Garnet Bercasio from Bacacay, Albay, highlighted her proactive approach by conducting daily clean-ups in her backyard to protect her family. She stressed the importance of prevention over treatment, advocating for household discipline to curb the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Isaac, a minor who contracted dengue last year, shared his increased caution when visiting other places. He expressed a strong desire to avoid contracting the disease again, citing the fear it instilled in him during his previous experience.
