DOH Deploys Mental Health Teams After Zamboanga School Shooting

Zamboanga city: The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday announced the immediate deployment of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) teams following a shooting incident at the junior high school campus of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.

According to Philippines News Agency, Health Secretary Edwin Mercado has ordered the dispatch of healthcare professionals to assist those affected by the event. "We are still gathering information po about this unfortunate incident. Meanwhile, the Secretary (Edwin Mercado) has directed the immediate deployment of MHPSS teams," the DOH communicated in a Viber message to reporters.

The statement emphasized the DOH's readiness to provide support for the processing and healing of those involved, as well as assistance with medical expenses. Reports indicated that the incident resulted in the deaths of two students, including the shooter. Other students were evacuated to safety while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The DOH assured the public that further updates will be shared as official reports are verified from the ground.
