DOH Enhances Tuberculosis Detection Efforts in Bicol

Bicol: The Department of Health (DOH) 5 is enhancing efforts for the early detection and identification of potential tuberculosis (TB) patients in the region. In an interview on Tuesday, DOH-5 infectious disease cluster head Dr. Jannish Alcala-Arellano emphasized the importance of early detection in managing TB cases.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH-5 conducted a regionwide active case-finding activity on March 15 in celebration of World Tuberculosis Day, screening 981 individuals for the disease. The individuals screened are currently awaiting test results. Participants included contacts of TB patients, high-risk groups, vulnerable populations, and those with known exposure histories, who were screened through chest X-ray tests.

Dr. Arellano explained that individuals who test positive for TB via chest X-ray will be referred for GeneXpert testing for confirmation. If confirmed positive, they will begin treatment at health centers. GeneXpert testing is a rapid molecular diagnostic tool that confirms the presence of TB bacilli and detects resistance to Rifampicin, aligning with World Health Organization recommendations.

Dr. Arellano also highlighted ongoing efforts to sustain TB prevention and treatment initiatives. With the support of partners such as Philippine Business for Social Progress and the Culion Foundation, year-round mobile X-ray case-finding is conducted in various municipalities with assistance from local government units. Additionally, the DOH and local government units are providing free testing using GeneXpert, TB medications, and X-ray vouchers at different health centers.

The DOH-5 is encouraging the public to take advantage of free TB screening available at rural health units and health facilities.
