Antique: A team from the Department of Health (DOH) Central Office arrived in Antique on Monday to investigate the cause of the health emergency that affected around 268 learners in the two schools in Barangay Pis-Anan, Sibalom town last week. Antique Integrated Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ric Noel Naciongayo stated that the team, consisting of a doctor and two nurses from the DOH Central Office Epidemiology Bureau, specializes in investigating chemical exposure that led to symptoms such as chest pain and fainting among the students.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Naciongayo expressed hope that the findings and recommendations from the DOH team would be available within the next five days, aiming to prevent a recurrence of the incident. The team is expected to collaborate with a toxicologist from the DOH Western Visayas for Health Development to analyze the findings.
As of Sunday, only eight learners remain admitted in two hospitals in the province. In response to the incident, classes have been suspended at Pis-Anan National High School and Pis-Anan Elementary School. This suspension is enforced by Executive Order Number 2025-013-VII, signed by Sibalom Mayor Gian Carlo Occe±a on July 4.
The mayor's executive order emphasizes the ongoing investigation into the source of the foul odor incident by both local and national experts. The suspension aims to ensure the integrity of the samples to be collected and to protect the safety of the students from the affected schools.
