Manila: The San Lazaro Hospital (SLH) has introduced the Patient Appointment System (PAS) to enhance its services for persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIVs) in need of consistent care.
According to Philippines News Agency, Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa announced during a presentation at SLH that there has been a significant increase in new HIV cases in the country, with a 564-percent rise recorded from 2010 to 2024. Additionally, deaths due to complications related to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have surged by 667 percent over the same period.
The DOH's latest data indicates that 58 percent of PLHIVs are concentrated in the National Capital Region (NCR), Calabarzon, and Central Luzon. Meanwhile, approximately 9,439 individuals in the country have succumbed to HIV and AIDS-related complications.
SLH, a primary HIV treatment center in the NCR, has launched the PAS, an online platform designed to encourage PLHIVs to seek regular consultation and treatment. These services include access to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, check-ups, and pre and post counseling sessions.
Secretary Herbosa emphasized the significance of the PAS by stating, "Sa pamamagitan nitong PAS, mas padadaliin ang pagkuha ng libreng antiretroviral drug para sa mga PLHIVs lalo pa't mahalaga na regular nila itong nakukuha," highlighting the importance of regular access to free ARV drugs for PLHIVs.
He further linked this initiative to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s goal of making health services accessible to every Filipino. The PAS can also be used to set appointments for free HIV screening through its online portal at patientappointment.doh.gov.ph.
