DOH Reports 35% Decline in Leptospirosis Cases, Prepares 3.1 Million Prophylaxis Capsules

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) announced a significant decrease in leptospirosis cases, recording 3,440 cases as of August 8, a 35% reduction from the 5,318 cases reported in the same period of 2025.

According to Philippines News Agency, despite the overall annual decline, there was a noted 27% bi-weekly increase in cases from July 12 to 25, 2026, with 348 cases compared to 275 cases between June 28 and July 11. In response to heavy rains linked to the enhanced southwest monsoon, known locally as "habagat," the DOH has strategically distributed 3.1 million doxycycline capsules across its central office and 17 regional Centers for Health Development.

To facilitate access to prophylaxis, DOH-designated Code White Alert centers, local government units, and almost 3,000 Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth)-accredited Guaranteed and Accessible Medications for Outpatient Treatment (GAMOT) providers are making the capsules available through Yaman ng Kalusugan at Proteksyon (YAKAP) provider prescriptions.

PhilHealth has revised its benefit packages beginning July 15, 2026, to counteract clinical costs, increasing financial coverage rates for leptospirosis patients. Standard hospitalization coverage has risen to PHP63,000 from PHP21,450, while severe and critical care coverage now spans from PHP170,000 to PHP411,000 for complex cases demanding specialized treatment.

The DOH's Zero Balance Billing Program ensures that treatment for severe leptospirosis cases is fully covered in DOH-administered and PhilHealth-accredited hospitals. The DOH emphasizes the importance of immediate medical consultation for anyone exposed to floodwaters or mud within a 24 to 48-hour timeframe to assess risk levels and initiate appropriate prophylaxis.

Precautionary measures for individuals navigating flooded areas include wearing boots and washing hands and body with soap and clean water immediately. Those experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, leg muscle pain, or eye redness are advised to visit leptospirosis fast lanes at DOH hospitals or nearby health facilities for prompt evaluation and treatment.
