DOH Reports 53% Drop in Flu-like Cases From January to February

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) has announced a significant decline in cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and dengue across the country from January 1 to February 1.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo stated in a radio interview that a total of 9,995 ILI cases have been recorded as of February 1, marking a 53 percent reduction compared to the 21,340 cases documented during the same period in 2024. The number of deaths has also decreased, with six reported fatalities compared to 33 in the previous year.

Domingo noted that while the overall numbers are substantially lower, there is an observable, albeit not alarming, upward trend. He emphasized the importance of adhering to health advisories, such as those issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for travelers to Japan, which are also relevant for Filipinos at home. He advised the public to practice proper hygiene, including washing hands, wearing face masks, covering mouths while coughing, and staying at home when symptomatic.

The DOH supports the advisory issued by the Philippine Embassy regarding the rise in influenza cases in Japan, which is based on data despite the absence of an official outbreak declaration. The epidemiology bureau has noted an increase in influenza-like illnesses in Japan, a trend that began in November 2024 and has started to decline in January, typical for the winter season.

Domingo urged Filipinos planning to travel to Japan to adhere to the DFA's advisory to ensure their health and safety.
