Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) has reassured the public that there is no need for alarm regarding recent reports of influenza-like illness (ILI) cases in the country. The number of ILI cases recorded in recent months remains lower than the same period last year, indicating a controlled situation.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo conveyed through a Viber message to reporters that from January to September this year, 121,716 ILI cases were logged. This figure represents an 8 percent decrease compared to the 135,538 cases reported during the same period last year.
Domingo further clarified that the Department of Education's (DepEd) decision to suspend face-to-face classes in public schools across the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday and Tuesday was a preventive measure. This action aims to help prevent the potential spread of illnesses.
The DepEd-NCR announced the temporary suspension to enable disinfection, sanitation, and building inspections in schools. This decision follows a series of earthquakes and an uptick in flu-like symptoms among students and staff.
The DOH has reminded the public to maintain good hygiene practices, ensure cleanliness at home and in schools, and consider flu vaccination if necessary. The health department has committed to continue monitoring cases of influenza and other respiratory illnesses nationwide and has assured that health facilities are ready to respond if there is a rise in cases.
