Manila: Health authorities are urging the public to strengthen hand hygiene practices as reports of conjunctivitis cases, or 'sore eyes,' prompted some schools in this city to temporarily shift to online learning.

According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Deab Eltanal, acting chief of the Local Health Support Division of the Department of Health-Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR), stated that while the agency has received reports of cases, it has yet to obtain official figures from local health offices. Eltanal emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to stop the spread of conjunctivitis despite the lack of official numbers.

Eltanal explained that conjunctivitis may be caused by viruses or bacteria and is commonly transmitted when a person touches contaminated objects or surfaces and then rubs their eyes. He advised the public to practice frequent handwashing with soap and water or use alcohol and hand sanitizers to reduce the risk of infection. Schools have also been advised to regularly disinfect classrooms and other facilities to help prevent further transmission.

The advisory came after at least two schools in this city announced over the weekend through social media that they would hold online classes this week following reports of learners contracting conjunctivitis. Eltanal clarified that conjunctivitis is not spread simply through eye contact, contrary to a common misconception. He emphasized that transmission occurs through direct or indirect contact with infected eye secretions, underscoring the importance of proper hand hygiene as one of the most effective ways to prevent infection.
