DOH Warns Against Heat Illnesses in National Capital Region

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday warned the public against heat illnesses as the heat index may rise to 46 degrees Celsius in the National Capital Region until Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH highlighted that the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) classifies temperatures from 33 to 41 degrees Celsius as 'extreme caution' while temperatures from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius fall under the 'danger' category. PAGASA also forecasts a "danger" heat index in regions including Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, and Olongapo City.

The DOH advisory indicated that such temperatures could lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion, with symptoms including fatigue, dizziness, headache, vomiting, and dizziness. It warned that these could escalate to heat stroke, a severe condition that may cause unconsciousness, confusion, seizure, or convulsion, and potentially death if not promptly addressed.

The public is advised to seek cool, shaded areas with good ventilation if experiencing symptoms. The DOH recommends removing outer clothing and applying a cold compress or ice pack to specific body areas such as the head, face, neck, armpits, pulse, ankles, and groin. For conscious individuals, sipping cool water slowly and frequently is advised, along with contacting emergency services or proceeding to the nearest hospital.

In addition to monitoring PAGASA's report, the DOH suggests drinking plenty of water while avoiding iced tea, soda, coffee, or alcohol. People are encouraged to limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., use protective gear such as hats, umbrellas, and sunblock, and wear light and loose clothing.
