Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ), through the Office of the Prosecutor General, has sanctioned the filing of multiple charges against lawyer Levito D. Baligod and the group known as the '18 maleta boys.' The decision follows recommendations from investigating prosecution panels to proceed with several Informations based on various complaints.

According to Philippines News Agency, the cases stem from the execution and dissemination of a joint sworn statement, along with related press conferences, interviews, social media posts, and other online publications. The DOJ approved filing 10 separate informations against the '18 maleta boys,' which include six counts of cyber libel under Section 4(c)(4) of Republic Act 10175, known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, and four counts of perjury.

Baligod is named a co-accused in certain informations alongside the '18 maleta boys.' Additionally, a separate charge for one count of cyber libel under Section 4(c)(4) of RA 10175 will be filed against him. The corresponding informations are set to be filed in the appropriate courts.

Several other complaints in the resolutions were dismissed due to a lack of prima facie evidence with reasonable certainty of conviction. The findings resulted from an evaluation of evidence submitted by the parties during preliminary investigation. The DOJ's approval signifies a determination that sufficient evidence exists to warrant further legal proceedings.

The cases will advance to the appropriate courts following legal protocols and due process. In response to the DOJ ruling, Baligod announced plans to seek a reconsideration.
