Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla as the new Ombudsman, Malaca±ang announced on Tuesday. Remulla's appointment comes as part of the administration's efforts to uphold transparency, strengthen anti-corruption measures, and ensure justice is administered fairly and efficiently.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) released a statement emphasizing that President Marcos is committed to transparency, fairness, and the rule of law as guiding principles in his administration's pursuit of a Bagong Pilipinas. The PCO highlighted Remulla's decades of service as a legislator, governor, and lawyer, noting his integrity and commitment to public service.
Remulla succeeds former Ombudsman Samuel Martires, whose term ended on July 27. Prior to his new role, Remulla served as the 59th secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ) since June 2022. During his tenure, the DOJ advanced significant reforms aimed at modernizing the justice system, decongesting prisons, accelerating case resolution, and expanding access to legal services.
Remulla's appointment comes amid growing corruption concerns related to government infrastructure projects, especially flood control programs, which have been scrutinized by the public and lawmakers. The PCO reiterated the Marcos administration's commitment to intensify its anti-corruption drive, emphasizing that public office is a public trust and those who betray it will be held accountable.
PCO acting Secretary Dave Gomez, speaking to Palace reporters, stated that Remulla underwent a 'very stringent' selection process. He expressed confidence in Remulla's impartiality in his new role as Ombudsman, noting that the selection process involved a rigorous vetting procedure conducted by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), culminating in a decision by the President.
