Vienna: The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday reaffirmed the Philippines' longstanding commitment to the United Nations in combatting the illegal drug problem.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla emphasized the Philippines' dedication to multilateralism and the UN as crucial platforms for addressing global challenges, including drug issues, during the 68th Session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs. The session, taking place in Vienna, Austria, from March 10 to 14, 2025, provides a venue for discussing international cooperation against narcotics.
Remulla highlighted the Philippines' human rights-based and public health-centered strategy in tackling the drug problem under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s administration. He underscored the importance of prevention, education, and comprehensive rehabilitation programs for individuals dependent on drugs.
He noted encouraging results from these initiatives, citing the 2023 National Survey on Drug Abuse in the Philippines, which reported a decline in drug use prevalence from 1.67 million users in 2019 to 1.47 million in 2023.
The Justice Secretary also mentioned that the Philippine government is currently conducting an executive review of its drug policies. The review aims to strengthen a "whole-of-nation" approach, integrating law enforcement, socio-economic, and health interventions to effectively tackle dangerous drugs and benefit future generations.
