Manila: The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is backing the initiative for more frequent earthquake drills across all establishments and workplaces nationwide following recent seismic activities that have affected the country. DOLE Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma emphasized the joint responsibility of workers, employers, and the government in advocating for occupational safety and health.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOLE has expressed approval of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines' (TUCP) call for increased drills to enhance awareness of safety protocols during earthquakes and other calamities. House Deputy Speaker and TUCP party-list Representative Raymond Democrito Mendoza has called on companies nationwide to conduct drills at least twice a month to develop "muscle memory" among workers, which is crucial when disasters occur.
Mendoza highlighted that these regular drills should also serve as platforms for emergency preparedness discussions, including informing workers about their rights to refuse unsafe work conditions. He stressed the importance of integrating preparedness into daily work culture, rather than treating it as a mere formality.
The call for action comes in the wake of several strong earthquakes that hit various parts of the country, with magnitudes ranging from 5.0 to 7.2, causing damage and casualties. In response, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has instructed national agencies to provide assistance to affected areas and expedite recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
