Manila: This year, the Marcos administration has enacted four significant laws focusing on the advancement of science and technology in the Philippines.

According to Philippines News Agency, these legislative measures are expected to enhance the country's capabilities in various scientific fields.

The Phivolcs Modernization Law aims to bolster the Philippines' disaster risk reduction strategies. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. expressed gratitude for the legislative support, emphasizing the law's role in enhancing geological monitoring through improved equipment, additional seismic stations, and a skilled workforce. Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol highlighted the law's importance in providing timely and accurate information on geotectonic hazards. The law allocates PHP7 billion over five years for substantial upgrades, supplementing Phivolcs' regular budget.

The Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP) Act addresses both ongoing and future health concerns. Signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in September, it focuses on virus research and vaccine development. The VIP is responsible for conducting comprehensive vaccine research, developing diagnostics, and investing in advanced virology infrastructure.

The Philippine Atomic Regulatory Act, also signed in September, ensures the safe use of nuclear energy across various sectors. This law establishes the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulator Authority (PhilATOM) as an independent body overseeing nuclear safety. It separates regulatory functions from the promotional and research activities of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute.

Lastly, the Expanded Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Act aims to accelerate human resource development in STEM fields. By increasing access to quality science education and establishing more campuses nationwide, it seeks to prepare the youth for future challenges. The DOST has reported supporting 10,811 STEM scholars for the first semester of 2025.
