Bobon: The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) has signed a memorandum of agreement with the local government unit of Bobon, Northern Samar to enhance fiber extraction technology in the area. The agreement was formalized by Jenneli Caya, DOST-PTRI Research and Development Division chief, representing DOST-PTRI Director Julius Lea±o Jr.; Bobon Mayor Reny Celespara; and DOST 8 (Eastern Visayas) Director John Glenn Oca±a.
According to Philippines News Agency, in a speech on Thursday during the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week celebration, Caya stated that Bobon was chosen for the development of abaca and pineapple fibers following an assessment of the town's potential as a natural textile fiber innovation hub in Eastern Visayas. This initiative was requested by Senator Loren Legarda and supported by local fashion designer Puey Qui±ones.
The partnership aims to enable the production of natural textile materials from agricultural by-products of abaca and pineapple, providing local communities with opportunities for livelihood while advancing eco-friendly textile innovation. The initiative will integrate appropriate technology in fiber production and the innovative use of agricultural wastes in transforming the textile industry.
The DOST-PTRI is also considering integrating handloom weaving into the curriculum of the Bobon School for Philippine Craftsmen in the town. The agency encourages the use of abaca and pineapple fibers to create textile products through enhanced extraction, processing, and blending technologies.
Key initiatives include the improved Pinukpok fabric technology, which weaves these fibers into materials for apparel, housewares, and accessories, and the development of blended spun yarns with other fibers for increased sustainability and market appeal.
