DOST Chief Welcomes Marcos Recognition of Local Innovations

The department of science and technology (dost): welcomed on Wednesday President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s recognition of local innovations, and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting research and development.

According to Philippines News Agency, in his State of the Nation Address last Monday, Marcos cited the M/B Dalaray, an electric ferry catamaran developed through the collaboration of DOST and the University of the Philippines (UP), as a mobility solution. The vessel was designed as an environment-friendly alternative for inland water transport and is expected to support the modernization of the Pasig River ferry service.

"The President's recognition of the M/B Dalaray affirms the value of investing in Filipino science, technology, and innovation. It demonstrates how government support for research can be translated into practical technologies that benefit the public while advancing sustainable development," DOST Secretary Renato Solidum said in a statement. Solidum said recognizing the development of practical solutions that address national priorities, including sustainable mobility and cleaner transportation systems, reflects the growing impact of Filipino research and innovation on improving public services.

Meanwhile, Solidum said SONA attendees were given a copy of the President's Report to the People 2022-2026, which contained some of the DOST's initiatives. The report cited, among others, the Balik Scientist Program, which assisted 856 technologies and projects from July 2022 to June 2026; and the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Center for Research and Innovation (NAICRI) as the country's central hub for AI (artificial intelligence) research, advanced computing, innovation, and talent development.

It also includes the Grants-in-Aid Program, which provided PHP12.64 billion in funding assistance to 824 research and development projects between July 2022 and June 15, 2026. "The President's recognition of these initiatives reflects the government's continued confidence in science, technology, and innovation as key drivers of economic growth, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life for Filipinos," the DOST added.
