DOT Encourages Tourists to Engage in Philippines’ Rich Holy Week Traditions

Manila: The Department of Tourism (DOT) encouraged the traveling public to discover the Philippines on a deeper level during this Holy Week by experiencing the country's rich Lenten traditions. In her Lenten message on Wednesday, Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco extended her wish of 'peace, reflection, and spiritual renewal' for Filipinos and visitors across the country.

According to Philippines News Agency, Frasco highlighted that Holy Week is a profound time where faith gathers families and people to churches and pilgrimage sites across the country, reflecting the Filipinos' 'deeply rooted spirituality and vibrant cultural expressions.' She encouraged both local and international travelers to immerse themselves in the richness of Philippine Lenten traditions, from Visita Iglesia, Pabasa, and Senakulo, to the quiet solemnity of the centuries-old churches and the beauty of the countryside during this time of prayer and contemplation.

Frasco emphasized the importance of embracing the opportunity not just for rest and spiritual reflection, but also to appreciate the heritage, artistry, and hospitality of the communities visited. She also reminded travelers to practice responsible tourism, show respect for local customs, and support local businesses and workers.

This year's Holy Week, beginning on April 13 (Palm Sunday) and ending on April 20 (Easter Sunday), is projected to attract more than 30 million domestic and international travelers, with tourists heading to popular destinations across the country. The DOT has activated its regional operations centers to coordinate and monitor high-traffic tourism areas to ensure proper oversight.

Meanwhile, the Vatican's representative to the Philippines, Papal Nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown, urged the faithful to participate in Holy Week activities. He emphasized the importance of engaging in spiritual activities, especially during Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In an interview over Church-run Radio Veritas, Brown encouraged people to sincerely partake in Holy Week liturgies, assuring them of divine graces.

Archbishop Brown also encouraged participation in Maundy Thursday activities such as the Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Last Supper, which includes the rite of foot washing. On Good Friday, churches will commemorate the Seven Last Words and the Passion of the Lord, while Black Saturday evening will feature the All-Night Celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord.

Radio Veritas is providing special programming this week, featuring interviews with priests and bishops to help people reflect and better understand church teachings during these significant days. Notable figures like Caloocan Bishop Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, and others will share their insights.
