DOT Highlights Equitable Tourism as Key Driver in Regional Economic Growth

Manila: Government efforts to spread tourism development nationwide have been identified as a crucial factor in the economic growth of all regions, the Department of Tourism (DOT) announced Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) recently reported that the economies of 18 regions all recorded annual positive growth in 2024. Central Visayas led with the fastest growth rate of 7.3 percent, followed by Caraga at 6.9 percent, and Central Luzon at 6.5 percent. Additionally, four regions, including Davao Region, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and the Negros Island Region (NIR), posted growth rates above the national average of 5.7 percent.

Secretary Christina Frasco of the DOT expressed her satisfaction with these developments, stating, "This strongly affirms our strategy to equalize tourism development across all regions, as directed by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and the National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028." She emphasized the role of inclusive, community-based, and sustainably driven tourism in fostering regional economic growth.

The DOT has observed a steady increase in tourists visiting various regions since the Philippines reopened its borders to international travelers in 2022. Caraga alone saw a rise in visitors from 725,266 in 2022 to 1.7 million in 2024. Similarly, the Davao Region welcomed over 4.1 million tourists last year, while Central Visayas recorded an impressive 7,517,450 visitors in 2024.

Secretary Frasco highlighted the impact of flagship programs like the Philippine Experience Program, Tourist Rest Areas, and the Tourism Champions Challenge in empowering local provinces and municipalities. "These programs serve as concrete instruments for spreading opportunities and uplifting local economies, giving communities the means to thrive while showcasing the diverse beauty and heritage of the Philippines," she added.

The DOT remains committed to promoting a sustainable and inclusive tourism industry, ensuring that both tourists and local communities benefit. The April 2024 PSA Labor Force Survey revealed that 16.4 million Filipinos, accounting for 34 percent of total employment in the first quarter, directly or indirectly benefited from the tourism sector.
