DOT Welcomes PH as Among Michelin’s Top Food Destinations for 2026

Manila: The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Tuesday welcomed MICHELIN Guide's naming of the Philippines as one of the Most Exciting Food Destinations for 2026. In a news release, the DOT said the recognition further elevates the country's culinary standing on the global gastronomy map and highlights the country's vibrant food scene, particularly in Manila and nearby areas, as well as Cebu.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippines joined 15 other recommended food destinations worldwide. "Gastronomy is a vital expression of our national identity. This recognition supports our broader goal of strengthening sustainable tourism by celebrating what is authentically Filipino and by elevating the people and places behind our food," Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said. "With the support of our stakeholders, we aim to elevate our culinary identity, celebrate our rich traditions, empower food producers, and share our unique stories with the world."

The MICHELIN Guide noted the balance of outstanding traditional and modern cooking techniques practiced by the country's young local chefs, saying this blend deserves wider international recognition. Frasco said the recognition comes at a time of major milestones for Philippine gastronomy, which includes the arrival of the MICHELIN Guide in the country, the hosting of Terra Madre Asia and the Pacific, and the country's upcoming hosting of the UN Tourism World Gastronomy Forum in 2026. "This year stands as a testament to the Philippines' exceptional culinary potential," she said.

Recommendations by anonymous MICHELIN Guide inspectors showed that standout Filipino dishes include sisig, sinigang, inasal, and adobo. These foods were cited for their distinctive balance of sweet, salty, and acidic flavors achieved through regional fruits, spices, and cooking methods, such as marinating and grilling. The guide also highlighted the abundance of fresh produce available year-round, attributing it to the country's favorable climate, which serves as a foundation of its culinary offerings.

In addition to food destinations, the MICHELIN Guide recommended several high-quality accommodations for visitors, like Grand Hyatt Manila and Shangri-La at the Fort, and beachfront resorts, such as Dusit Thani Mactan Cebu Resort and Crimson Resort and Spa Mactan. The arrival of the MICHELIN Guide in the country on Oct. 30 recognized 108 establishments in Manila and Cebu. The list includes one Two-Star restaurant, eight One-Star restaurants, 25 Bib Gourmand establishments, and 74 MICHELIN-Selected restaurants, along with special awards for sustainability, service, young chefs, and mixology.

With the recognition, the Philippines joins countries known for culinary excellence, among them Italy, Trkiye, China, Saudi Arabia, the American South, Florida, Canada, and Poland.
