Manila: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has voiced its support for the continued operation of motorcycle taxis throughout the country, announcing a forthcoming department order to maintain their legal status while awaiting new legislation.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized that the continued operation of motorcycle taxis aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s initiative to provide commuters with more transport options, facilitating faster commutes and allowing for more family time. Dizon stated that the department order would be issued as the current motorcycle taxi pilot program is set to end in 2024, and there is insufficient time for Congress to draft and pass new legislation on the matter.
Dizon highlighted the need for a permanent legislative solution to ensure the continuous operation of motorcycle taxis and expressed the DOTr's commitment to collaborating with lawmakers to develop beneficial solutions for both riders and commuters. He also stressed that these taxis must adhere to the new department order on road safety, as well as existing standards and regulations regarding roadworthiness and driver qualifications.
The announcement followed a meeting between DOTr executives, led by Dizon, and Angkas founder George Royeca. During the meeting, Royeca emphasized the importance of motorcycle taxis for the livelihoods of riders and noted their role as an essential and affordable transport option for commuters, particularly on Metro Manila's congested roads.
