DOTr Chief Orders Immediate Repair of Quake-Hit Balut Island Port

Davao occidental: Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez ordered the immediate rehabilitation of Mabila Port on Balut Island, Davao Occidental, which suffered the most damage from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the region on Monday. Lopez emphasized that the rehabilitation aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to swiftly repair damaged infrastructure to ensure passenger safety and the continuity of trade.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) reported that Mabila Port sustained severe damage, with significant destruction to its causeway and apron. In response, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago instructed the Port Management Office in General Santos City to assess the structural integrity of the remaining facilities and oversee the repair of the damaged areas.

Santiago highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that although the port is partially operational, it is crucial to identify and address any damages promptly to safeguard the residents of Balut Island. Safety remains a top priority, and any compromise is unacceptable.

In communications with reporters, PPA spokesperson Eunice Samonte confirmed that all PPA ports remain operational, except for the General Santos Port. During its inspection, trips are being rerouted to the Port of Malalag to maintain the region's economic activity and support the livelihoods of Mindanao's residents.
