Tarlac city: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced the construction of a Bailey bridge as a temporary substitute for the Agana Bridge, which recently collapsed in Tarlac City.

According to Philippines News Agency, heavy equipment and materials have been delivered for the construction of this temporary structure, just a day following the bridge's collapse due to incessant rains caused by the southwest monsoon. The Bailey bridge, noted for its portability and modular truss design, allows for rapid assembly without the need for heavy machinery.

On Sunday, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the collapse of the Agana Bridge, which followed the earlier collapse of the Aquino Bridge on Friday, both incidents attributed to continuous monsoon rains and the strong currents of the Tarlac River. Secretary Dizon emphasized the urgency of repairs, noting that Tarlac City is currently cut off except for a route through Gerona. He has ordered immediate temporary repairs on the Agana Bridge to expedite the restoration of connectivity.

The construction of the temporary bridge aims to restore access and reconnect Tarlac City with neighboring regions. In addition, engineers from Manila have been dispatched to evaluate potential quick fixes to make the Aquino Bridge accessible to light vehicles. This action follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to expedite responses to infrastructure damage.
