Manila: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has ordered the assessment of all national bridges across the country to ensure the safety of commuters and motorists amid continuous rains caused by the southwest monsoon (habagat).

According to Philippines News Agency, in a memorandum dated Sept. 1 and released on Wednesday, Secretary Vince Dizon directed the agency's regional directors and district engineers to immediately inspect the structures and address any observed damage to prevent further deterioration. The order was issued in connection with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure the structural integrity of the country's infrastructure in the wake of various calamities.

Dizon directed officials to "immediately conduct inspection and assessment of all national bridges within their respective jurisdictions, prioritizing those with significant scouring, exposed or undermined foundations, affected abutments, and other signs of distress that may compromise structural stability or lead to possible collapse."

He also ordered the implementation of "immediate and appropriate measures on bridges found to be at risk, including the implementation of necessary traffic restrictions, emergency protection works, repairs and other interventions, as may be warranted" to ensure public safety and prevent further deterioration or damage.

DPWH officials were directed to submit their report that will contain the general information of the bridge, findings and observations, immediate actions taken, and recommendations for long-term measures, with the corresponding photographs attached as annexes.
