Camarines sur: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the suspension of ongoing rehabilitation works on the Maharlika Highway segment that covers the provinces of Quezon and Camarines Sur. This decision was revealed during a press conference held at the Tourism Building of the Province of Camarines Sur by Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Dizon explained that the suspension is part of a strategic move to develop a comprehensive and more effective plan for the road network that spans the country's three major islands. He emphasized that all segments of the Maharlika Highway included in the General Appropriation Act of 2026, currently under district-level implementation, would be put on hold. This pause is meant to consolidate funding and allow for meticulous planning, including opening bids to both local and foreign contractors, to ensure a high-quality rehabilitation process.

Secretary Dizon further highlighted that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has prioritized the full rehabilitation of the Maharlika and Andaya highways. The President has committed significant funding over the next two years to ensure that the project is executed correctly. Dizon assured the public that the damaged segments of the highway network, particularly in Quezon and Camarines Sur, would be repaired within two years.

The Maharlika Highway, described as the backbone of the entire country, stretches from Aparri to Mindanao and plays a crucial role in facilitating the movement of people and goods. Proper rehabilitation of this highway is expected to have a substantial economic impact and improve the lives of Filipinos nationwide. Dizon mentioned the involvement of Japanese consultants to aid in the planning process, highlighting the intent to approach the rehabilitation with precision.

During the press conference, Dizon also outlined plans to inspect other segments of the highway across the Visayas and Mindanao regions. These inspections aim to ensure a thorough evaluation of the entire Maharlika Highway, enhancing its infrastructure across the different regions.

The inspection in Camarines Sur included visits to several barangays, and concluded in Naga City, where Dizon was welcomed by local officials, including Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte. The governor expressed gratitude to President Marcos for prioritizing the highway's rehabilitation, acknowledging the significant allocation of funds to address longstanding issues faced by the Bicolanos.
